At Najmaa, our aim is to maintain a high standard of Shariah compliance throughout the way our mutual operates. That means seeking qualified scholarly guidance, reviewing how our arrangements work in practice and being open to questions.

We welcome everyone to examine our published Shariah compliance documents and engage with us. Whether you are a member, a scholar, a community organisation or someone considering Najmaa for the first time, we encourage you to understand the principles and responsibilities behind our approach.

We believe that openness helps us improve. Questions about our structure, certification or oversight deserve careful consideration.

What Shariah compliance means in practice

Najmaa’s Vehicle Protection is based on Takaful principles, including mutual assistance, known as ta’awun, and contributions made on a tabarru, or donation, basis.

These principles shape how the arrangement is structured and explained to members. Shariah review considers the substance of the product, its supporting agreements and how it operates. Our approach is informed by recognised Islamic finance standards, including those published by the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions, or AAOIFI. 1

For members, the questions are practical. Who has reviewed the product? What does the certificate cover? How is compliance monitored after the product begins operating? We want those questions to have clear answers.

Our Shariah board and advisory team

Najmaa’s Shariah oversight is supported by ADL Advisory Sdn. Bhd., our appointed independent Shariah adviser. ADL is a specialist Shariah advisory firm based in Malaysia.

The team presented on our Shariah page includes Dr Mufti Yousuf Sultan, Mohamad Mishal and Abdullah Zubayr. All three are also named on the current Vehicle Protection certificate. Their work brings together Islamic jurisprudence, product review and Shariah auditing. 1

The purpose of this advisory relationship is to give Najmaa access to specialist Shariah guidance as the product is developed and operated. It also provides a route for technical questions and proposed changes to receive appropriate consideration. 2

The responsibilities of Shariah oversight

Reviewing the product and its agreements

Shariah advisers examine the structure, contractual arrangements and documentation against the relevant Shariah principles. This includes considering whether the way a product is described is consistent with the arrangements that support it.

For Vehicle Protection, ADL’s certification followed a review of the product’s structure, operational arrangements and documentation. 3

Providing guidance as the product develops

Products and operating processes can change. Shariah oversight provides guidance on proposed developments and questions that arise during operation, helping management understand how changes should be approached.

This matters when a change affects the substance of an arrangement, the way a transaction is carried out or the obligations explained to members. 2

Supporting ongoing review and audit

Najmaa’s published governance approach includes certification, continuing review and monitoring, and an annual Shariah audit. 1

A Shariah audit examines how the approved arrangements work in practice. Depending on its scope, it can consider transactions, records, controls and member-facing documents. The aim is to identify differences between the approved structure and what actually happens, so those differences can be investigated and addressed. 4

Addressing compliance concerns

Najmaa Mutual Limited’s management remains responsible for implementing Shariah guidance, maintaining appropriate governance and reporting, and identifying and correcting non-compliance promptly in consultation with the Shariah adviser. This responsibility is expressly recognised in our Vehicle Protection certificate. 3

Good oversight depends on that working relationship. Advisers need relevant information, and management needs to act on the guidance it receives.

Our current Vehicle Protection certification

Najmaa’s Vehicle Protection holds ADL Certificate ADL00350925, issued on 1 May 2026 and valid until 30 April 2027.

The certificate confirms ADL’s opinion that the reviewed product aligns with the relevant AAOIFI Shariah Standards and established principles of Islamic jurisprudence. It applies specifically to Vehicle Protection; additional products or activities require separate certification. 3

We encourage readers to check a certificate’s product scope and validity period alongside the product documents. This helps explain precisely what has been reviewed.

We welcome your questions and review

We invite members, imams, scholars, industry professionals and the wider community to review our published material and raise questions with us.

You can start with our Shariah compliance page and certificate, then read the Product Disclosure Statement and Financial Services Guide for the product’s operation and the responsibilities of the entities involved.

You do not need to be an Islamic finance specialist to ask a useful question. If a term is unclear, a document needs explanation or you have a concern about how an arrangement works, we welcome that feedback.

Where a question requires specialist Shariah consideration, our aim is to address it with the appropriate advisers. Constructive scrutiny helps us identify what needs clearer explanation and where further review may be needed.
