Tawakkul: trusting Allah and taking the steps
What Tawakkul means, the lesson of tying your camel, and how preparing ahead with Takaful fits with trust in Allah.

Trust Allah. Take the steps.
We plan journeys, look after our vehicles and think about the people who depend on us. Those everyday decisions raise a question: how does preparing for tomorrow fit with putting our trust in Allah?
Tawakkul, or reliance on Allah, helps us understand how faith and responsible action work together. It offers a starting point for thinking about uncertainty and the choices we make each day.
What Does Tawakkul Mean?
Tawakkul means placing our trust in Allah while taking appropriate, permissible steps within our ability.
In Qur'an 3:159, Allah tells the Prophet (peace be upon him) to consult others, then rely on Allah once a decision has been made. Consultation, a decision and trust appear together in the same verse.
For everyday life, this offers a practical reminder: seek sound advice, consider the choices available and act with care, while recognising that the outcome remains beyond our control.
The Lesson of Tying Your Camel
A man asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) whether he should tie his camel and rely on Allah, or leave it untied and rely on Allah. The Prophet replied: “Tie it and rely (upon Allah).” (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2517)
Securing the camel was the step available to him. Reliance on Allah remained part of that same decision.
Applied today, the lesson can help us think about maintaining a car, wearing a seatbelt or preparing important information for our family. We take care with what is within our reach and recognise the limits of what our efforts can achieve.
What Can Preparing Ahead Look Like?
Start with the responsibilities already in front of you.
Care for what you use. Vehicle maintenance and safe driving are practical ways to look after ourselves and other road users.
Help your family prepare. Keep useful records accessible, discuss who to contact in an emergency and consider how an unexpected expense could affect your household.
Understand your options. When considering financial protection, understand its cost, benefits, exclusions and how the arrangement works. Ask questions if something is unclear.
Preparation will look different for each person. A sensible step is one that fits your circumstances and resources.
Our responsibilities also change. A different vehicle, a new job or someone becoming dependent on us may be a reason to review existing arrangements. Revisiting those choices helps us think about whether they still suit our lives.
Where Does Takaful Fit?
Qur'an 5:2 encourages cooperation in goodness and righteousness.
That principle of ta'awun, or mutual assistance, is central to Takaful. It provides a way for people to prepare collectively for specified risks through a shared arrangement.
At Najmaa, accepted members make tabarru' contributions, or contributions on a donation basis, to support the mutual protection arrangement. Our Vehicle Protection model brings that principle into a service people can consider for their circumstances.
An informed decision includes understanding both the mutual model and the product terms. You can explore our Shariah approach and ask questions about how the arrangement works.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does planning ahead show a lack of trust in Allah?
Taking appropriate precautions can sit alongside reliance on Allah, as the camel narration illustrates. We can give careful attention to our responsibilities while recognising that Allah determines the outcome.
Does preparing guarantee that things will go to plan?
No. Unexpected events can still happen despite careful preparation. The purpose is to take reasonable steps within our ability and consider how we would respond if circumstances change.
How can I start putting this into practice?
Choose one task you can act on today: check your vehicle's maintenance, organise important records or review an existing protection arrangement. Where a decision needs specialist knowledge, seek guidance from someone qualified.
