When you are trying to align your financial decisions with Islam, the options available may not always meet your needs. That raises an important question: what should you do when a suitable alternative is unavailable?

Understanding darura can help us approach that question thoughtfully. It also reminds us why building practical alternatives matters.

What Does Darura Mean?

Darura means necessity. It concerns serious circumstances in which a limited exception to an otherwise applicable Shariah ruling may be permitted. Scholars also distinguish hajah: a need involving hardship below the level of necessity, with its own conditions. 1

In Qur’an 2:173, Allah (SWT) allows a concession concerning prohibited food for someone compelled by necessity, within limits. The verse illustrates mercy in genuine difficulty; applying the principle to a financial arrangement requires further scholarly assessment. 2

These concepts deserve careful consideration. Convenience or personal preference should not simply be labelled necessity.

Your Circumstances Matter

Assessing darura involves considering the seriousness of the harm, whether an adequate lawful solution is available, and the extent of any exception required. A concession must remain proportionate and last only while its justification continues. 1

The absence of an alternative is relevant, but does not by itself establish darura. Equally, a product being available does not automatically settle every person’s situation.

Seek guidance from a qualified scholar familiar with financial matters. Explain your needs, the options you have explored and the consequences of going without. Bring the actual product documents, so the assessment can consider both your circumstances and the arrangement itself. 3

An Alternative Must Be Practical

Electric vehicles offer a useful example.

Najmaa’s current Vehicle Protection terms generally exclude fully electric vehicles. Hybrids, including HEVs and PHEVs, are not excluded on that basis, although other eligibility requirements still apply. 4

For someone whose vehicle falls outside those terms, Najmaa’s existence does not resolve their protection needs. That gap is relevant to a scholar’s assessment; it does not automatically establish a particular religious ruling.

An alternative needs to work in someone’s circumstances. Eligibility, scope, affordability and any legal or contractual requirements should form part of the discussion.

Building More Choice Is Part of Our Purpose

At Najmaa, our aim is to make protection aligned with Islamic principles accessible to more people. We also recognise that our current offering cannot meet every need.

That is one reason we collect information about demand. When people tell us what protection they need, it helps us identify gaps and build evidence for discussions about broader eligibility and future products.

Expanding access takes careful assessment, sufficient capacity and responsible planning. An enquiry cannot guarantee future eligibility, but it can help make an unmet need visible.

Our role is to keep working towards suitable options, with Allah’s permission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Cheaper Price Establish Darura?

A price comparison alone cannot establish necessity. If affordability creates genuine hardship, explain the full circumstances to a qualified scholar rather than drawing a conclusion from price alone.

Should I Review My Situation When New Options Appear?

Yes. If you are relying on a necessity-based concession, discuss relevant changes with a qualified scholar. What matters is whether the circumstances supporting that concession still apply. 3

What if Najmaa Cannot Meet My Needs Yet?

Seek qualified guidance on your available options, and let us know what protection you need. Your enquiry can help us understand where more choice is needed.
